5th Grade Geometry Resources

Geometry in the upper elementary grades is more complicated than just matching shapes and names. Students are now being asked to categorize polygons in different hierarchies and subsets along with classifying triangles by their sides and angles

There are SO many vocabulary terms to memorize and then apply to open-ended questions. I found, years back when the math standards changed, that it was difficult to find resources that challenged students but then also gave enough practice and scaffolding for other students who took a bit longer to grasp these concepts.

I decided to make a few resources to address these problems and they are now some of my best sellers in my TpT store.

Geometry Classify 2D Figures in Hierarchy Task Cards

Geometry BUNDLE 5th Grade 2D Shapes in Hierarchy Sheets and Task Cards

True false cards to sort
Matching shapes to names

Task cards with a variety of open-ended questions, hierarchies and multiple-choice questions

Along with my OG resources, I have added a new easel resource for students to use as a digital/self-checking activity. What a perfect addition to math center rotations!

Grade 5 Geometry Hierarchy Activities

I found that projecting the hierarchy posters (Free in my store) on my smartboard and asking various questions during small group lessons really helped to drive discussions and allowed me to informally assess student knowledge.

My kiddos always loved drawing examples of each of the shapes as a warm-up activity – I would choose a different student to use the smart board and then the rest would draw with expos on the laminated graphic organizers. This was an easy warm-up while kids were shuffling into my room.

Check out what some other educators are saying about these geometry resources.
